Abstract
The prevalence of obesity worldwide is increasing at an alarming rate. Obesity causes various complications, shorten the life of patients and can degrade the quality of life, so that appropriate treatment is essential. Behavioral modification and supportive therapy, pharmacologic and surgical treatments are available. The number of bariatric surgeries has steadily increased during the past decade as a result of the increasing prevalence of morbid obesity, inconsistent weight loss with nonoperative therapy, and increasing evidence that bariatric procedures result in significant and durable weight loss, improve comorbid conditions. There are some principal points about bariatric surgery: who is the best candidate and which is the most optimal procedure? Also, it is important to assess patients¡¯ operative and nutritional risks and to establish the best model for postoperative care. The authors review thoroughly multiple medical literatures and current practice trends on perioperative evaluation and management of bariatric surgery.
